Campus Orientation

Intake  |  Jan 28th 20

Some students each and every year, especially first-years always ask one question, is orientation really that important? If I miss orientation, will I have a hard time adapting?

The answer to all these questions is a big YES!

For most institutions, if not all, the last week of January is when they have activities (which will be covered in the next blog post) on campus just to help first-year students with navigating their way through campus and of course knowing all the hotspots on campus.

In this post, we have outlined the hotspots of three major institutions.

Let’s find out which places were dubbed the hotspots in the various institutions.

  1. Wits University

Here’s a list of places that every Witsie student should know (regardless of the year of study);

  • Student Enrolment Centre

  • Library

  • Amic Deck

  • Bus Station

  • Great Hall

  • The Matrix (student centre)

  • University of Johannesburg

Here’s a list of places that every UJ student should know (regardless of the year of study);

  • Student Enrollment Centre

  • Library

  • Campus Health

  • Bus Station

  • Auditorium

  • SS (student centre)

  • Campus Square

  • Campus Orientation CPUT

Here’s a list of places that every UJ student should know (regardless of the year of study);

  • Computer Labs (found in the Commerce and Engineering Buildings)

  • Piazza (also known as chill spots)

  • Library

  • New café in the Engineering Building

  • Student Centre

The locations mentioned above are just a tip of the iceberg compared to what you’ll actually find on campus. You may be asking yourself, what about lecture halls? Where do I attend my tutorials?

Well, the answer is very simple. During orientation week every faculty has a day in which students enrolled in that faculty come on campus and are taken on a tour of campus in order to know where their specific lecture halls are. This is why institutions such as Wits stress the fact of attending orientation week so as to avoid you being led astray from one end of campus to the other.

I’m sure by now the question being asked is, what fun activities are being done for orientation week?

Our answer to that will be available in our next blog post.

For now, HAPPY CAMPUS NAVIGATION!
