Dear tenant,
Historically, 179 VDS has been an exclusive-use residence specifically reserved for SMU students, as per our head-lease with the University and, as always, the entire building was also made available to SMU under its head-lease for the 2021 academic year.
However, this year SouthPoint was informed, after registration closed, that there were still around 100 unfilled beds and that SMU has taken the decision to rather lease the building on a non-exclusive basis, only paying for occupied beds. This means that the extra beds at 179 will now be available for rental to non-SMU students who are studying at other institutions (e.g TVETs, colleges).
Implications for current SMU residents at 179 VDS including the following:
• SouthPoint will be advertising to non-SMU students that we still have space available at 179 VDS, and we will be opening 179 VDS to non-SMU students;
• Given this change, it’s important to note that it means that you may have a non-SMU roommate who is studying at another institution (e.g. TVET, local colleges, etc);
• 179 residents will have to share common facilities (bathrooms, kitchens, TV rooms, study rooms, etc) with non-SMU students;
• House Rules and procedures might need to be adjusted to ensure they work for all students, not just SMU students.
